I’m stealing this prompt from Julia Cameron. Some writer friends and I are doing a round of The Artist’s Way, so probably quite a few of the prompts would come from that over the next three months. I recommend starting with a five-minute timer and warming up with writing anything that comes out of your pen.
For this exercise, I recommend setting a timer for the first part. The first part: write as many alternative jobs as possible. Anything goes, but you should have at least ten. Jobs you think would be interesting to do, even for a day. Bus driver, bookshop keeper, bookkeeper, beekeeper, parking inspector. Whatever. I encourage you not to stop at ten but keep going until your timer is up.
For the second part, pick one of the jobs, and imagine yourself having this job. What would your daily routine look like? How would you feel? How would you see the world? If you want, you can write it as a scene. The scene can be anything: coming home from work, an incident related to the job, the commute, going out with friends from work, and so on. See what tickles your fancy and write it out.
Hey there! I would love to hear whatever you're willing to share that came from the prompt. Please comment below or click on the chat window, even if it's only to tell me that you've found this prompt useful (or ridiculous).
